A philosophy for thinking on the page

A place for
your thoughts
to grow.

Write while it’s fresh.
Find it when it matters.
See where it leads.

A few things worth keeping
A thought can start anywhere.
Its connections can grow over time.
Easy to begin. Worth returning to.The Notes Manifesto · 01—05

The starting point

A note is a thought you can return to.
Let capturing it be easy.
Let finding it feel natural.

A notes app should make room for unfinished thinking: the line you want to remember, a conversation, an idea that hasn’t found its shape. These are principles for a place that helps those things become useful.

01 Make starting easy

Begin with
the thought.

A good idea rarely arrives neatly titled and ready to file.

Open a page and write. Let today hold the rough edges: a few words, a saved line, something someone said. There should be a useful place to begin before you’ve made any organizing decisions.

The first job is to catch the thought.

Maybe the best part of a library is the feeling that you can stay awhile.

Keep the entrance simple. Give people a place to start.

Come back to this when the idea needs some air.

A daily page gives unfinished thoughts a first home.

02 Take the filing out of capture

A home without
the homework.

A meeting is already a meeting. A source is already a source. Let that be enough to give it a predictable home.

Simple, familiar places make finding things easier. A loose thought can stay a page. Add details and connections when they help; the thought deserves to be kept either way.

Organization should ask less of you.

03 Let context stay close

Follow a thought.
Keep your place.

A useful connection should help you understand what you’re reading. Follow it, take a look around, and come back to the sentence that brought you there.

A slower library

People need somewhere to arrive before they know what they’re looking for.

There’s a line in The walking notebook about leaving room for a useful detour.

Maybe the entrance should feel like that: a clear beginning, with something worth discovering just beyond it.

You were thinking about a place to begin.

A reference can sit alongside the writing that led you to it.

An illustration of the principle. These pages and reading notes are original examples.

04 Keep the meaning connected

One thing.
Many useful places.

A project can belong in today’s writing, a meeting, and a reading note. It should still be the same project.

Let references carry the original with them. A new name should travel with the thing it names. A task should retain the conversation that gave it meaning. Finding it somewhere else should add context.

Connections can grow without creating copies to maintain.

05 Make trust tangible

Your words
stay yours.

A notes app can hold years of your thinking. That deserves more than a reassuring save icon.

Writing should work offline. Saving should be dependable and understandable. Recovery should give you a way back. A useful export should let you take your words, their shape, and their connections with you.

The work should have a future beyond the tool.

A trust contract

Keep the words.
Keep the way back.

Save
Know where your work stands.
Recover
Understand what happened and what comes next.
Take it with you
Keep the content and the context.
These are expectations to design for, and earn.

Assistance should be invited.

AI can help retrieve context or suggest a connection, with clear sources and changes you can review. Your voice and choices stay central. Basic note-taking should work on its own.

A place worth returning to

Write freely.
Find what matters.
Keep the thread.

A few principles for the tools
we trust with our thinking.
